I was FaceTiming with my girlfriend for over 3 hours Monday night telling her about the drastic lifestyle change I'm trying to adjust too, which suddenly lead into talking about random things that started cracking myself and herself up... But then again, when do we not laugh at our stupid jokes. So here are fun facts about the Pistol Whip lifestyle breh...
We met at FIDM in 2010 in our intro to digital imaging class. I remember seeing this girl in the Jeffrey Campbell back off wedges (keep in mind this was when Jeffrey Campbells were VERY rare), and thinking to myself that I had to be friends with her because of how she dressed. Lol. (great way to judge someone right?!) So in class as we were doing ice breakers to get to know one another our professor told us to go in a circle state our name, where we're from, and where we worked. So as I went on telling the class everything she kept smiling at me. When class ended I was waiting to go to the elevator to head to bart and thats when I introduced myself to her. We didn't hit it off that fast just yet... the following week our class had to attend a boring lecture presentation and we sat at the same table not even realizing it. And at that table we started talking about shows and events we attended... Which was crazy because back then when we were 17 we realized how many of the same shows we've gone too and had the same similarities in artists. The one that amazed us was the myspace music tour which featured JUSTICE back in 2009. Electro music was not as big as it was back then compared to now. So hearing Amanda talk about the shows experience with me brought nostalgia. You know what else was interesting, was the fact that after I told my class about myself Amanda actually knew who I was because one of her friends happened to read/followed my blog. Thats when I realized we had to hang out even more outside of school. After exchanging each other contact info we met up at a Thai restaurant and fell in love.
At the restaurant we talked about starting a blog together, because we just shared the same similarities. We both danced tahitian, dressed alike, loved food, loved puppies and not cats, and most importantly just loved live music. And thats how the birth of Pistol Whip happened. It was a long process coming up with the name and purpose for starting a blog together. But we figured whatever lets just start blogging about our lifestyle.
One of our most frequently asked questions is how we came up with the name "Pistol Whip" which ties into me watching an episode of Gangland which featured Detroit. I remember eating a cup of noodles when the episode transitioned into an interview of an old lady describing her neighborhood, stating that she got out of her car and got pistol whipped and robbed by a gangsta looking dude. After that scene happened I bursted out laughing then paused... then decided to call Amanda up and tell her "HOW DOES PISTOL WHIP SOUND TO YOU?" And Amanda was down because it sounded so hard and bay wid it.
What is the lifestyle? 2 islander girls who literally aren't afraid to express themselves. Who also happen to skate to your nearest 711 to get slurpees, hot cheetoes, and taki's. We wear crazy shit, rap to ghetto ass songs, eat ANYTHING & EVERYTHING, and clearly show nothing but love towards everyone. Throughout our 20 years of life we've learned to just be ourselves and if people don't like it we don't take it personal, we understand everyones opinions. Because in the end an opinion is just an opinion. It's just crazy how fast people started riding the wave with us because we didn't expect that much attention from people.
In 2011 we decided to take Pistol Whip to the next level and started DJ'ing events and parties. It started with the FIDM Halloween Party in 11' that struck the madness. Amanda is a really loud girl so when she's on the mic yelling shit towards people there is no stopping her... Its actually the cutest thing ever. We go dumb, turn up, and act like a bunch of dudes during our sets. Mainly because we don't want to be seen as 2 little girls who happen to DJ and style clothes. But more to the fact that as rare as it is to see girls spinning trap music, bay slaps, gangsta rap, and 90's hip hop.. we can turn up just as hard as the fellas.
In 2012 we started focusing more on the blog rather than parties. So as we documented outfits and updated visuals for the site we started interacting with our followers more. Amanda and I started to notice how much we started inspiring girls as a duo. After gaining 30k followers on our site in a span of 2 years we realized we started a CALIFORNIA movement by Amanda and Micah. And as much as we wanted to continue with our personal lives we couldn't just stop there. We fell off the blog for a while because I graduated and I needed to focus on my life and Amanda had to focus on work. But like growing together within a couple years taught us a lot. Amanda inspires me so much with how she is a go-getter and does not give up on life, even when bad things happen. And I think thats what made our friendship super strong till' this day.
